While
the A300 was under development, a smaller capacity variant was
considered. The A310 was officially launched in 1978
and the prototype first flew in 1982. The fuselage is
essentially the same as the A300 except considerably shorter.
The wing and horizontal tail surfaces are new, including a high-tech
wing from BAe of reduced area and span.
