The prototype C-124, the fifth C-74 with a deeper fuselage and
clamshell nose loading doors, first flew in 1949 and entered service in
1950. Around 450 were built. Used in conjunction with the
Douglas C-133, the Globemaster II remained in service until replaced by
the Lockheed C-5A Galaxy in 1970.
