Seversky P-35

In 1935, Seversky Aircraft entered their SEV-1XP in the Air Corp fighter competition.  No contract was awarded and Seversky reentered their design with a more powerful P&W R-1830 in 1936.  The Air Corp ordered 76 aircraft using the designation P-35.  The P-35 was the first single-seat, all metal pursuit ship with retractable landing gear and enclosed cockpit to go into regular Air Corps service.  An additional 60 aircraft were acquired in 1941 from an order by Sweden.

The P-35 was the granddaddy of the famous P-47 Thunderbolt.
