First flown in 1975, the Yak-50 was put to the test in the 1976 World Aerobatic Championships and took the two top places in the men's and the five top places in the women's competitions.

The Yak-50, with its light weight and high power-to-weight ratio, provides the performance of World War II fighters with economy of operation.  A two-seat version, the Yak-52 was also produced.

The Yak-50 ended production in 1985.
