The A.V. Roe and Company Ltd. (Avro) was founded by Alliot Verdo Roe.  A.V. Roe designed, built and piloted the aircraft credited with the first flight in England by a British-designed aircraft powered by a British engine in 1909.

Famous Avro aircraft include the 504 of World War I fame, the Lancaster bomber of World War II and the Vulcan bomber of the 1960's and 1970's.

Avro was acquired by Hawker Siddeley in 1963.
