PZL (Panstwowe Zaklady Lotnicze or National Aviation Establishment) is the descendant of the Warsaw Aviation Company (AWIATA), formed in 1910.

In 1918, the Warsaw Aviation Company was reorganized as CZL (Central Aviation Establishment).  This organization was again reorganized as PZL in 1928.

After several reorganizations of the Polish aircraft industry after 1945, PZL is still a major center of aircraft development in Poland.  The main organizations are PZL Warszawa-Okecie, PZL Mielec and PZL Swidnik.
