          Western
            Electric was the electronics manufacturing division AT&T when
            Bell Labs, another AT&T division, proposed an anti-aircraft
            missile system to the US Army in 1945.  As the manufacturing
            arm of AT&T, Western Electric became the prime contractor for
            the Nike missile system.
             History 
            1872: Enos Barton and Elisha Gray
            incorporate Western Electric Manufacturing Co. in Chicago, Illinois. 
            1881: Bell Telephone acquires Western
            Electric. 
            1984: Western Electric is divided into
            several divisions and its name disappeared.
