Beech Model 17 Staggerwing

click on photo for more images

The Model 17 first flew in 1932 and was able to reach 200 mph (322 km/h).  The backward stagger of its upper wing both provided the pilot with a good field of view and good stability.

When the U. S. Army Air Corp required a new fast transport, the excellent performance of the Model 17 lead to its procurement in 1939.  The Staggerwing was given the designation UC-43 and named the "Traveler".
