Grumman TBF Avenger

Designed to replace the obsolescent Douglas TBD Devastator, the prototype Avenger first flew in 1941.  Grumman's first torpedo/bomber design, the TBF beat Vought's TBU in competition.

The Avenger's operational debut was at the Battle of Midway in 1942.  The Avenger was arguably the U.S. Navy's most successful torpedo and bomber aircraft of World War II.

The Avenger also saw service in the British Royal Navy and the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
