The Pilatus P3 was designed to replace the Pilatus P2, North American AT-6 and Morane I in use for training in the Swiss Flugwaffe.  First flown on 3 September 1953, this aircraft was the Swiss primary trainer from 1956 - 1994.

The P3 was the basis for the PC-7 of 1967 and the PC-7's follow on, the PC-9.
